Family Day
Many of you non-Canadians might not know this. But officially this year, Canada has gotten a new holiday, called Family Day. It’s on Febuary the 18th, and is intended to bring families closer together…plus, because there is SUCH a long stretchbetween Christmas and March Break.
But from what I’ve heard on the radio, only about 60 % of the entire workforce gets this holiday. My parents aren’t involved in that 60 %. They are, unfortunately, part of the 40 % that work.
I, too, just found out today that I am also part of the 40 % of people that work on Family Day. And to think…Mondays are supposed to be my day off. I’m not entirely happy about that…but I think we get extra pay for working it. But, what I really wanted to do on this day was finish that art test I need to do to get into St. Clair College in Windsor.
So much for that idea…
I just wanna know…when am I ever going to get a day to myself??

too bad brandon… that sucks…
I learned the other day in co op that not all statatory days off are given as days off… companies are not legally bound to give you those days off… which sucks for us… but oh well!

but jake the thing is the employer can’t legally force you to work that day. if you say you don’t want to work it he can’t do anything. so you can actually get it off.

I don’t think America has a holiday like that….and what’s cool is that you got to add a holiday!
As for getting a day to yourself, I actually just had two of those. Work has been eating up my weekeneds so I requested off for yesterday and today. That was Genious on my part I think. Cause I got to sleep late. Twice. =D SO you should do the same. Take a chill day dude. Believe me you probably deserve it.

Guess wat? I am part of the 40% as well that work on Family day!
AND our union has not recognized it as a holiday….yet….we are fighting for it and i hope we get it cuz i worked the whole day today and i want time and a half!!!

besides, Brandon’s trying to keep a week off during March break so he can go to France or something, so he doesn’t want to be taking more days off than necessary, in order to keep that week off.

in reply to jake….no, the employer cannot fire you because you are being a “pest” lol. They cannot fire you without a valid reason, especially if you have a union.

Yeah well.. .the world doesn’t run perfectly like that… we live in a sinful world… Employers aren’t supposed to fire people if they get sick or injured either, and look what happened to my dad. (Technically he didn’t get fired though… they threatened to… then they decided not to … then they decided to… then they decided not to… and then dad got fed up, so he just quit, using Article 17)

Well, we had a case where Stefani’s sister(dunno her name) got fired because her grandfather died. Or so the story goes. But it’s likely just the fact that she always had excuses for getting days off, and they thought this was just one more of them.
